HAPPY NEW YEAR-2011

16 December 2010

Personality of the month:

Dr.Binoy Kumar Pani is a famous ophthalmologist of India. He was a student leader during his college days. After his post graduation he joined Tata steel hospitals and was very popular amongst his patients but the management had other ideas hence he resigned and had a clinic of his own.
Every year he has a free eye camp for the poor and needy in Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand states of India.
His specialty is retinal, glaucoma and cataract. Last month I met him and took this photograph with my Canon camera. Behind all his success is his wife Pramila a very good soft spoken and family lady liked by one and all. She has given Dr. Pani two brilliant children one a girl and the other a carbon copy of his father. He is our personality of the month.

INDIAN ABROAD:
Sixteen of my next generation is in United States of America and few more are likely to join them soon. That reminds of 70’s when people from Orissa studied and worked in Calcutta (Kolkata) and we used to raise our eye brows, but things have changed with time, distance is not a problem due to fast transport.
Surprisingly TIME can be purchased now if you have money. The young generation are more practical, more parents loving, more patriotic more pro Indian and they contribute more for India than Indian staying in India. Thanks to the IT out break the real Indian talent is now known to the rest of the world.
Instead of discouraging them not to go out of the country we should rather encourage them to go out and learn some positive aspects of their working culture, etiquette, manners and behavior and come back to India to make it the best in the world. We have the best brains but we utilize it in wrong places and wrong way, we need a good leader not the present day politicians who have and will ruined the country. People like Prof:PBTripathy, Prof: Sukant Tripathy, Bikash Panigrahi and Priyanka Pani are few examples from our family. Out of which Sukant is no more, he died in a freak accident but his creations (Konark) are likely to hit the market soon.

Prof:Sanat Ray, an eminent Oriya poet,Critic, president of Cultural Academy and secretary Lok Natak Mohotsav, a familiar and popular figure in Oriya literature expired on 5th of this month after a short illness at a very young age of 52 years.
He is survived by his two sons and a loving and simple house wife Swarnalata Ray.He was like a younger brother to me.I will miss him very much as he was not only a fine critic but a loving person and was attached very closely to my family. He has edited, and corrected many of my short stories before publication. All my family members pray for his soul to rest in peace. If there is rebirth then i would love to have him as my neighbour.

ELEPHANT KILLERS OF ORISSA

RUTHLESS KILLERS OF ELEPHANTS IN ORISSA:

First I must mention why I have written ORISSA not the new name ODISHA??
The reason being it may appear as another new state in India but no sir it’s the same Orissa with new alphabets. Our Politicians are expert in changing the names of faces and places because it shows patriotism!
Last week news prompted me to write this- “train driver sentence to 3 years jail term for killing elephants under the iron wheels which he was driving”. Alas similar punishments are ditched out to killers of tigers and elephants!!
The animal lovers are probably busy with collection of money or doing striptease or TV or media shows than doing any thing for the poor animals!!
Every other day elephants are being killed (in Orissa) by high tension electric wires or local alcohol mixed with poisons. These people blame the electric department for the elephants death but the truth is only 1% of accidental deaths occur due to this where as the villagers with different means bring down high tension wires(hooking has political support in this state) to the ground so that when elephants come at night they are electrocuted. It’s a poor state with very low yield cultivation products. Elephants after elephants are being killed by this cruel method but no one gets any punishments. Even if the total crop is sold from a village in Orissa, it may not be worth few lakhs but killing a huge animal as revenge is really shocking and sickening.
I request the animal lovers both Indian and international to do some thing about this beastly attitude of the people of the state. There are different means to stop the elephants coming to the main human habitat but killing them by poison or electric current is really inhuman.
With Rs: 2 per kg rice being distributed by political parties (for Votes) who cares if a huge area of crop is destroyed by animals!! Government is giving lots of compensations plus there are insurance companies to help. As such most of the cultivation lands in Orissa are under utilized due to poor canal water facilities and low rain fall. So there is no logic of killing these beautiful creatures for pea nuts.
The worst enemy of elephants are the Oriya news papers, these huge animals are projected as the villain and at times compared with Maoists . There is no sympathy for these animals death.
The bottom line is why these animals (snakes, elephants, tigers, deer’s, jackals and monkeys) stray into human habitats??We know the answer but not interested to do any thing for our environment and wait for some white skin lady or gentleman to come and help these helpless creatures.

ASIAN GAMES

At least i did not know that India won 10 gold medals in last Asian games, where 432 athletes participated where as this time (2010) 609 athletes and 234 officials have been sent with exchequer's money to get a tenth position!!What a pity, 843 people for hardly 40+ medals and that too mostly bronze or silver!!
Many people do not know that there are some Olympic events and others are minor events.
Only 40 medals so far have been won by India, but if one looks at the news paper one will think that India is winning all medals.Remember there are 476 gold medals at stake .Its good to encourage persons who achieve some distinction in sports but not the way the CM and PM and sports body do the cheap popularity declarations(cash prize, land, cars etc) for personal or political gains.
Once a famous sports person when asked to comment about our administrations in sports he told" the way you people worship bronze medalists and 4th or 5th sports persons in Olympic events, your country will not progress much, we have dime a dozen silver and bronze medalist which we do not take in to consideration or records."

This is the photograph of this blog owner Dr.sanjoy kumar satpathy. He passed out his matriculation from Balasore Zilla school, then continued his college education at famous FAKIR MOHAN COLLEGE ,Balasore .He did his MBBS from Utkal University and joined steel authority of India at Rourkela. He played for district level cricket when he was hardly 14 years of age.He represented Utkal University for three years then played for Orissa state side in Ranji trophy cricket tournament. He represented Steel authority of India and played for all India cricket tournament at Lucknow. In spite of his tough job as a doctor he was madly in love for cricket. He was born some thirty years early or else might have been a cricketer rather than a famous medicine specialist of Orissa. He is now 63+(PHOTO) and leading a retired life at Patia.

DEMENTIA

Corrupt Innocence:
There was a country where the king was liked by one and all, but the country did not progress.
Every body was sincere and hard working but the results were dismal.
One day a saint came to that kingdom but was disappointed to see that the country was what it was a decade back, so he wanted to know the cause. Every one was full of praise for the king but the poverty level was high. Ultimately he found out that the king was defunct and the Queen who was very corrupt was running the country.
The king called the saint to listen to his suggestions .
Saint said “your highness, there are four types of rulers:
1: Lazy and drunkard.
2: Gambler
3: Listens to women’s advice.
4: Idiots
All these above rulers actually ruin the country.
The best one for the people and country will be one ,who gets up early, listen to criticisms, interacts with common man, and has creative ideas, but strong in administration and removes the culprit out of the country. Your highness you please find out which category you belong to.”
Similarly your neighboring state the King appears innocent but he does not run the country-he is a dummy as a result of which that country is projected as a shinning one by the PR department but on the contrary it’s going down the hill day by day due to corruptions all round.”
Your highness good administrators are born not made.”

GRACEFUL AGING

Starting from film stars to politicians hiding ones age by different means may be by cosmetics, or medical means have become a fashion in recent times.Majority of film stars are colouring their hairs or wearing wigs to look young but unfortunately they are trying to run away from the realities of life , they are trying to cheat them selves, because they are in a pseudo world. Millions of liters of hair dye gives the finishing touch to our aging politicians, most of them look like jokers with pasted moustache and darkened hair on receding hair lines. The logic behind this is-- no one(mostly fools) want to look old!! HA-HA

INDIAN VILLAGE

INDIAN VILLAGE:
How many of you have visited a village recently in India?? Not CWG village I mean.
Pathetic is the word I can use for most of the villages in Western Orissa. The roads are washed away in rain due to substandard construction; the schools are used as cowshed during monsoon. Villages bring back some of your childhood nostalgic memories as they are only for name sake, people have migrated to towns. Who is responsible for it? We are responsible, not to have returned back to our respective ones after retirement. But the love for one’s village is enough criteria or something else is required for a senior citizen? The answer is simple- the medical, electricity, water, communication and marketing facilities were all neglected during our planning programme. Our MPs and MLAs stayed away from villages for years together but could win elections after election through dubious means. They are present day king, press is in their hands so also the TV channels, some even have their own.Towns and cities are overcrowded, villages have a deserted look. Parental lands are being sold for a song in most of the Odisha villages like Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar district. Lands are purchased by illegal migrants from neighboring countries; ministers keep quite because these people go to cast 100% votes.

With a whipping Rs: 70000 crores (see the photographs)spent for this 3rd grade sports event (after Olympic and world sports) the Indian public will be busy with Dushera festival and after a week or so the Media will high light how we have benefited by this mega event called Common Wealth Games.
Every second day the odiya news papers publish photos of school children sitting under trees instead of school building as the walls are broken or roof is missing or school children taking their mid day meals on dirty surface along with stray dogs. My appeal :To Whom It May Concern is that we must use the public money in the right direction like maintenance of schools and colleges, village ponds, roads to villages, libraries, play grounds, drinking water facilities and well equipped health centers.
With so much of corruption our PM kept quiet even though he is the head of the state, if I am clean but people surrounding me are corrupt then I have to be part of it ,simply can’t escape by keep on saying(Media) that I am not aware of all these, keep quiet and be a goody goody PM.
We can have nice villages all over India with these Rs: 70000 crores. So let the public, press, Sen.’s and Ban’s find out a way to revive our villages up to the standard of Common Wealth game’s villages, if at all this is what a village means by international standards.

TESTMATCH CRICKET

As expected India made a clean 2-0 sweep in the test series, similarly the one day series with out Sachin and other big players will be 3--0 in India's favor. The present Australian team will soon be beaten by Bangladesh, like West-indies team they will be relegated to second division in world cricket.Poor team selection and aimless captaincy will ruin this team very soon.Players like Hauritz will not get a place in any state sides in India. My request to the Australian public who love their country should put their foot down or else time is running out for the ashes series. With this attack India will win ten out of ten games!! Tell me which team has lost matches maximum after scoring above 450 or 550?? It's Australia man!!

DECISION MAKING

From sunrise to sun set most of our actions are dictated by the TV/Media and newspapers and celebrity. What to eat what toothpaste to use, which soap is best for you, your wall paintings, which computers you must have, which cinema is a box office hit( actually its a media hit with lots of kickbacks) Tell me have you any voice to tell Robert film is a bogus one, people will beat you to death in South. In CWG India is now 3rd even after lots of our athletes were allowed to participate with dubious drug records.Out of 85 countries only 27 have got some medals, what about the rest 58- also ran?Lets make it a rule that those countries which do not win a single medal will not be allowed to participate with out a qualifying mark.People say river Jamuna which is the drainage system of Delhi has become dark(thanks to CWG) after the rain water have gone to the sea.
You analyze--your self you have no opinion of your own in this world of media hype and advertisement.

The whole world knows that C W G (common wealth game)is being held this year at Delhi, India.Lots of politicians, including some from the present Government, bureaucrats, and intellectuals have criticized about the corruptions and colossal wastage of money in the name of sports.Very few know the other side of India- this picture speaks for itself. You are the best person to judge.

TEST CRICKET

What’s wrong with Australian Cricket?

First the team selection policy and the Captaincy.
Lets discuss the team selection policy: Wrong horses for wrong courses. Why player like North should get a place to tour India? Why this off spinner called Nathan Hurwitz gets a place in the team. He picks up odd one or two wickets on a turning track !! ha-ha.
Johnson the opening bowler with a Dracula look is hardly the bowler he was some two years back.
Clark, Hussey, North and Ponting have not scored more than 300 runs in last ten test matches and they are the backbone of the side!! Selectors pick up players when they are on the decline. Why David Hussey should not replace Mike Hussey? Cameron White should be made the captain for the Ashes series. Drop Hussey, Clark and North and bring fresh blood to the side. Young fast bowlers can make the change. Drop injury prone players. No place for Haddin the wicket keeper. Pick players keeping in mind the opponents strengths and weaknesses.
Coming to captaincy: Why Ponting did not use Clark not even for a couple of overs in both innings. If he is unfit to bowl show him the door. Why Not use an unorthodox bowler(Katich) to bowl to a no10 batsman? The irresponsible way he got out in both the innings should be enough to lose his captaincy? Why he quarreled with Khan, after all he is the captain of the side.
So to summarize bad captaincy and poor catching, batting and bowling change cost Australia the match They have no chance to square the series. They will lose the series 2-0.
PS: Compelled to write in my blog , because that bloody –Cricinfo.com gives you such letters to read to put back your views, you may land up exhausting all your energy guessing what’s written in black and white. Hope Australian public read this. I am an Indian but want to see an even contest not one sided ones that’s the reason i have published this one in my blog.

CANCER PHOBIA

CANCER PHOBIA:
Starting from sun rays to milk, any thing on earth can be carcinogenic ,do you know that?
The food you eat the medicine you take every day are likely to produce different types of cancer in your body. Nothing is safe. The milk you are drinking is carcinogenic ,if the cow has been injected with bovine growth hormones. The drugs one uses to fight cancer, it self can produce cancer! Drugs used by your orthopedic surgeon for bone growth can produce cancer. Insulin’s used to lower your sugar level can be dangerous, if it’s genetically modified. Newer insulin’s are not safe as the study shows. Unnecessary exposure to radiation by your doctors for investigation may cause more harm than good.
Many hormones used to keep your hormonal levels normal can create problems. Genetically modified food staffs can lead to genetically modifications of cells and malignant transformations. So the environment, food and drugs all in combination may result in malignancy in different organs of the body.
So what to do?
Thank GOD if you are disease free(CANCER) up to sixty years of age. Excepting few malignancy treatment is sheer wastage of time , money and energy, except that the doctors get the maximum benefits from your money. Tell me why so many rich and famous have died due to cancer even though it was diagnosed very early! Money can’t buy life, other wise so many rich Hollywood and Bollywood star would never have died due to heart disease or cancer.
Do not be afraid, lead a routine and disciplined life and live the rest to your destiny.

GOOD - BAD

BLACK AND THE WHITE:
If you are a follower of medical advice then read this. Why someone takes the advice seriously? Just to lead a healthy and long life. Why it fascinate me as a medical man ?Is the research results worth following or it’s just a gimmick. My sincere advice ; please do not follow it in first place to repent for it in later days.
1:Vegetarian food is good for you. Is it so? With tons of pesticide and cold storage food- how safe is it? Can every one get an organic vegetable? Is it genetically modified? Is it artificially colored?
2:Plenty of sleep is good .How much? It’s individual choice. Some need more some less, some get up at 4-5 am others at 11am/pm? But the tested one should be followed. Do you know sleep deprivation has killed more people than AIDS. Mouse can live without food for days but dies due to lack of sleep!
3:break fast should be heavy. Some take a very light breakfast and lunch and other take heavy break fast to dose in office. Some people eat a lot and never put on weight other starve(?) but still over weight.
4:dinner should be light. It’s your choice.
5:Drink 6 liters of water a day. Bogus, if you are all the time in A/C rooms-cars etc. Then you only need 600 to 800 ml of extra water a day+ your tea, coffee, cold drinks and food. If you are sweating due to heat then drink as per your thirst. Drinking unnecessarily to keep the blood clean is foolishness.
6:Take plenty of green vegetables. Where are the green ?
7:Take a bath before sun rise and get divorced.
8:Coffee is good the next day it’s bad.
9: If you are a smoker then for each and every problem cigarette is blamed.
10: In India if you drink then all medical problems are due to it ,so says the doctor.
11.Ghee is bad. Butter is good, next day it’s just the reverse.
12:Red meat is good for heart but bad for the vessels.
13:Cholesterol is good ,some say its bad.
14:Drinking 60 to 80 ml of good alcohol is good, some say red wine is good.
15: Milk is good for the bones and skin but bad for the heart.
16:Laughter is best medicine provided you know what it is!
17:Songs are soothing!! But where are those soothing songs?
18:Walking is good for your health. Every day thousands die due to morning walk , knocked down by bikes and cars.
19:Anti-platelet medicines are good for the heart or the pharmaceutical companies?
20:Follow proved facts not scientific data or conclusion derived by the multinationals companies..
The bottom line is –“no two persons are equal, hence conclusions are difficult.”.

MALE CHILD

WHY EVERY ONE INTERESTED TO HAVE A MALE CHILD?
Why some one marries? If you are not a gay the answer is simple- Just to have a family and to have some one to carry the family traits of the father or the mother. Getting married to a girl just for money (she is in a job with 5 digit salary)is utter foolishness. If you know how to get money than you can have.
So there is saying “do not keep money for your sons” if he is an idiot or brainy either way money is not needed. If idiot then money will be taken away by others and if he is intelligent he will have money- so what is the need??
Coming to the topic of a male child vs. a female child. A male is a half male and half female, where as a female is 100% female. A “ XX” means a female, A”XY” means a male child. A male child is produced from the Y sex chromosome of father and X chromosome of mother, a female child with the X chromosome of father and the X chromosome of mother. Father’s X chromosome comes from his mothers side and the other X from her(wife’s) mother’s side. Here the male dominance ends. The fathers Y chromosome comes to an end if her wife does not produce a male child. Consider the male points of view-poor fellow marries to have a family but his wife brings to an end the male Y which he had inherited from his father. For that reason in Japan and China this issue has a big implications on the society. Woman who gives birth to a girl child gets divorced or deserted by the husband and no other male take a risk of marring her. Hence many ladies do not like to marry, because no one is sure if she is going to produce a male child.
The reason why every one, including the wife , likes to give her husband the greatest and most valuable presentation —“A MALE CHILD”. Ask any married lady any where in the world to answer this question sincerely.

GOOD HEART

HEART DISEASE:
Here we will discuss about coronary artery diseases and it’s prevention.
There are about a dozen risk factors but the most important one is the Genetic factor.
Other risk factors may contribute but if your parents lived beyond 75 years with out a heart attack then you are lucky. They might not have kept millions off dollars for you but a good gene is worth trillion as you can live and enjoy a good life with proper life style activities. No one knows if the modern interventions really prolong life or prevent heart attacks.
Once you go to a cardiologist you will be under stress because he will tell you “you are sitting on a time bomb” or “you are on a volcano” you are lucky that you came in time.” Once you fall in to the trap and opt for a bypass or angioplasty then hope for the best. The most important thing most people forget is when they did not have the heart attack they had a dam care attitude to smoking, alcohol, food and stress. But once they had the surgery ,majority become over cautious and lose weight, stop alcohol, turn vegetarian, stop smoking and get hen pecked. I think it’s the change in life style which helps them to lead a better life than the $50000 spent on the operation.
My sincere advice to young people is to keep the waist circumference at 35 to 40 inches depending on the built and weight as per standard chart. Sleep 6 to 7 hours a day, eat in moderation, do walk for 4 to 5 kilometers a day, no smoking, avoid rich and oily food, do not eat if you do not feel like eating. No breakfast on holidays, but take an early lunch. With a good gene you need not have to bother about your heart ,if you follow these simple rules. The body is yours and you are the best person to know if your system needs help or not. For trivial problems do not go to a cardiologist, you may land up paying thousands for nothing. Remember a super specialist sees the person through a tubular vision and does all types of test to prove his point “that you need some intervention”.

UTTER NEGLIGENCE

MORE DEATHS DUE TO ACCIDENTS THAN DISEASES:
A strange county called India. The richest live here so also the poorest. The other day one of my friends sent me some photographs showing the luxurious bedrooms , where the President Of Zimbabwe stays and the house of some poor people there. I sent him back the house photographs of actor of Mr:S.Khan and some slums photographs of Mumbai. Both had similarity. After that he has stopped sending me E-mails.
Similarly if you are travelling maniac in India ,it’s possible that you stand a 50:50 chance of getting killed through road traffic or train accidents if not by over shooting the run way.
Here is a routine photographs of train accident in India but the railway minister says it’s the hand work of some opposition party or Maoists. I think you are the best judge. Please insure heavily before coming to India so that your wife or children will go on praising India through out their life.

OPINION ON FARMERS SUCIDE

After my letters to editor was published in SURYA PRAVE the Odiya news paper i have received many letters from the readers and this one i thought worth publishing as it came from a press person of repute.::==
Your observation in the letter to the Editor is correct and I know at least one instance of suicide by a farmer over his failed love with his sister-in-law in village Barahguda in Bargarh district.
Moreover, many farmers take land on lease and dream of earning quick money without thinking about rain. There is an old saying "cut your coat to suit your cloth" and this I personally feel is leading to suicides by farmers. They are over stretching themselves for numerous reasons before ending their lives.
Easy loan from private money lenders is another cause. There are many farmers who have died after failing to repay loan availed for daughters marriage and such social function.
But then political parties need fuel for fire and spitting venom against the State Government is the only way out. I completely agree with what you have written.

THE LOVE HATE GAME CALLED POLITICS

This love hate game in politics does occur where but it's very obvious in the state of Odisha, the name recently changed from Orissa. The problem with Odiyas is that their elected leaders(MLA) at the assembly and the the central government do not synchronize. For example when party :A: is at the centre, party :B: is at the state level as a result of which the people and the state suffers. The press which is at the hands of powerful ruling party goes on publishing all sorts of rubbish against the state chief minister and it's MLAs.All our politicians speak in each and every meeting about unity in the country but they them selves are dividing the country through religion, caste, language,Gods, reservations, age, sex, zones and culture.
For years together the odiya papers have one point programme- that's this CM is no good lots of corruptions etc,any death from AIDS to Zebra death in Zoo the CM is responsible.I other day i interacted with some learned persons who said they have stopped buying odiya papers for this reason.Water logging is at Delhi,Mumbai.Kolkata and every big city but if occurs at Bhubaneswar than there is a hue and cry in the press and media, no good work of the Government is ever highlighted.
There is one point programme by the centre"remove this party from power and rule".
I have no answer for this attitude of the Govt at centre. But one thing is for sure-- never elect a party for more than two tenure.

WORK CULTURE

WORK CULTURE:
Few years back, a dynamic engineer was appointed as managing director of Rourkela steel Plant, a PSU under -Steel Authority of India. He moved around different departments of the steel plant to find out why the company with more than the required work force, was a loss making one? When he visited the steel plant on a fine winter morning , he observed a festive atmosphere amongst the workers and officers. Majority of the workers and officers were taking tea and reading news papers in side and out side their respective office or work place.
The first step he took was to stop entry of news paper hawkers in side the steel plant office and work place. This was one of his few steps to bring back the discipline and a better work culture amongst the officers and workers.
There were lots of resentments from officers and union office people but he struck to his orders and that was the beginning of turn around in Rourkela Steel Plant, which then started making profits.
The name of that gentleman is Dr. Sanak Mishra. He is now a retired person .Even though he never liked me during my tenure as a doctors still than I liked his way of bringing people in line through tough means which most Indians need. Reading news paper during working hours is a big nuisance in India.

He moved around the different departments of the steel plant to find out why the company with more than the required work force was a loss making one? When he visited the steel plant on a fine winter morning , he noticed a festive atmosphere amongst the workers and officers.Majority of the workers and officers were taking tea and reading news papers in side and out side their respective office or work place.
The first step he took was to stop entry of news paper hawkers in side the steel plant office and work place. This was one of his few steps to bring back the discipline and a better work culture amongst the officers and workers.
There were lots of resentment from officers and union office people but he struck to his orders and that was the beginning of turn around in Rourkela Steel Plant, which then started making profits.
The name of that gentleman is Dr.Sanak Mishra. He is now a retired person .Even though he never liked me during my tenure as a doctors still than I liked his way of bringing people to line through tough means which most Indians need.
This news paper reading habit during working hours is a nuisance in India.
