GHOST OF NEW MOON

Ghost of New Moon:

That was the first posting of Dr. Binoy after his post graduation in Medicine at Karanjia.    He had left behind his family at Baripada. Majority of his patients were local tribal people who come to hospital only when someone was serious or their old tradition methods failed.
That was the month of May when the first monsoon rain had hit that part of the Odisha. There was a knock at his door in the early hours of a morning. Doc came out of the mosquito net to find out who has disturbed his sleep. When he noticed the hospital ward boy, he could know that he had to go to hospital. The ward boy Dhanu told him that “one serious young patient has been brought in a cot by a dozen of people from a nearby village called Tatoo.”
A healthy robust young boy was rolling with abdominal pain and was semiconscious. When Doctor asked about the history, patient’s brother told him that “there was a function in their village and the boy has taken some local alcohol and mutton at night and slept on the floor but suddenly got up around midnight and complaint of pain abdomen and vomiting. Thinking that the problem was due to alcohol all of them again went back to sleep but the boy made their life horrible, as a result they called the local black magician who told that it is due to a ‘ bad spirit’ which has entered his body, only killing of  a goat or a roster can satisfy the bad spirit. When everything failed they brought the young boy to the hospital.”

Dr. Binoy could diagnose immediately that it’s a snake bite case and proceeded in the best possible manner to save the victim with limited resources. The villagers who had accompanied the patient said “Due to the black magic every year during this new moon time of the year a person or two are killed by this ghost.”
The anti snake venom(ASV) which was lying in the store room unused for years was used along with other emergency drugs as a desperate manner without further delay even though there was no history of snake bite.
Doc told the brother of the patient about the possibility of snake bite to which they said doctor “are you mad, this is nothing but black magic.” The attendants were told to search for the snake where the patient was sleeping.
Doctor had a close watch on the blood pressure and respiration of the young patient. He looked at the watch it was 5:30 am.
After his return from quarter in few minutes he observed a big crowd, was sure the boy must have expired. The father of the patient fell flat on doc’s feet and said “Doc you are our God, what you said was right” and opened a gunny bag and lo behold there was a live banded krait. The young boy survived and Dr.Binoy became famous overnight, as a result of this incident his transfer was delayed.

On the day our doctor left Karanjia, that young boy whose name he remembers even today- “Ignesh Majhi”was waiting for him with his two children and wife to say good bye. Ignesh was his most memorable patient in his long medical career.

JERKY REACTION

My reactions is neither in favour nor against the death of the unfortunate lady.Comments in Indian press by public, different news papers on Indian Dentist death at Ireland.
Every one commenting in news papers, appears to be a SC judge and Super specialist.Easy to comment but we do not know the full story. There are many questions to be answered before one can take a conclusion.Like why the dentist wanted an abortion when her  husband was out.Septicemia was due to her self induced abortion or not, we do not know.Postmortem can throw some light and the law of that land will apply if there was any negligence. We are very much concern about our "patriotic" indians being raped, murdered or humiliated in foreign land where as daily thousands die due to criminal abortion by non medical men or woman or quacks in Indian villages and cities, so much our concern for Indian woman!!
Because the head line says 'Indian woman' we should not react  emotionally and comment in an erratic manner.
In India 6.7 million abortions are done every year out of which one million are performed  legally. Why we bring religion and politics in to this unfortunate death? We have our own laws for different religion so why we should criticize some other country's existing laws as regards abortion?Because we have legalised abortion so we want other countries to follow us left right and center?
No one dare marginalise the life concerns of the mass of our women as systematically as large sections of our media do, with their disproportionate attention to glamour dolls, film stars and the doings of the fashionable elite.

I know many people will send abusive mails but that's it.

PANDHDA VILLAGE

PANDHDA VILLAGE:

Situated 44 kilometers from the district head quarter Baripada of Mayurbhanj district, state Odisha, India. By road it’s around 256 kilometers from Kolkata.
Many famous personalities have come out of this small village which was earlier  surrounded by thick forest but now by few  bamboo trees, to name a few they are Satkodi Hota IAS,Nihar Hota,IAS,Prof Basanta Satpathy,Monoranjan Hota,Jagdish mishra,Santanu Satpathy,Prof sumanyu Satpathy,Dr.Sorojini Acharya,Sabita pattnaik & Drsanjoy kumar satpathy.
To travel to this village you can do it by train or bus, but in any case you have to walk four to five kilometers. Communication wise this village has very poor connectivity. Electricity in summer and rainy season is supplied for few hours only and that too in 120 to 140 volts. As there are no mobile towers nearby your set many not be of any use. This village is inhabited by mostly SC, ST and OBC people. There are four nice ponds for you to take bath but no latrines so be prepared to defecate outside.
Pandhda: Weather wise very hot in summers and cold winter nights.
One small ME and high school exists in this village for many many years, may be 100 or more years. Driest place on earth, even if the whole of Mayurbhanj gets submerged under water this village will escape. Lightening prone village. Nearest hospital is 12 kilometers.
Nearby many nice picnic spots, people are poor but friendly.

CONTENTMENT IN LIFE

Contentment
By sanjoy kumar satpathy-Atmananda Saraswati

The mind of a worried person by desire will have no rest. With
desire it will trouble you, concentration becomes impossible.
Desire is the fire in your body; it reduces you to
ashes. Contentment is the effective way to destroy
it.
The mother is the pillar of the home,of society, of
the nature and so of humanity itself.Mothers must know
the secret of mental peace,of inner silence,of
spiritual courage, of contentment, which is the
greatest wealth and of spiritual discipline, which
gives lasting joy in a family!
Contentment is the hallmark of a successful & a happy man.
Bereft of contentment, he's very unsuccessful. That's
the reason why we meet people with lots of money. We
come across people with high positions, with high
accomplishments, but yet with a sorrowful, miserable
life. Why? No satisfaction. Why is there no
satisfaction? Because there is no confidence to begin
with. So self-confidence, it confers the
self-satisfaction which is nothing but the
contentment. 'One must know what he/she has done. He is happy with
the results.' That is self-satisfaction.Contenment does not mean not improving one self but rather trying the best of what ever he or she is doing, then contenment comes. With out a try contenment is bad as it will lead to an inferior product.
If you want your child to learn how to treat others with respect, you need to model that behavior for them. If you want young ones to value the importance of education, make sure you demonstrate just how important school really is. And if you want your kid to learn contentment, they need to see it in your life first.Parents often forget that they are the biggest role model their kids will ever encounter. If you want your child to be content with what they have, you must lead by example.  Contentment, simply put, is living within your means. It means you are thankful for what you have and don’t get upset thinking about the things you don’t have.

HAPPY DIWALI

ORISSA POST --THE LOST IDENTITY

A TAMARIND TREE ;( A LOST IDENTITY) (Recently published in Orissa Post)
Bangiriposi a small place some forty kilometers from Baripada  was famous for it Ghats in the Similipal hills of Mayurbhanj but not any more due to the destruction of the hills and the jungles for construction of the national high way connecting  Kolkata with Mumbai. A huge tamarind tree was in the centre of this sleepy sub divisional head quarter, under its shade a small market place was in existence since many many years. Few days back on the maiden trip of Bhubaneswar –Bangiriposi superfast express I decided to visit this hottest place of Mayurbhanj. Not a single leaf would flutter at night, as wind blowing at night is never heard of in this part of the state, its thunder storm or nothing when it’s summer. After a sleepless night I decided to go to my parental village Pandhada around nine kilometers from Bangiriposi.
The bus stop was near that famous Tamarind tree .I went to the spot where I could catch the morning bus but where is the tree gone? No market, no gathering of people, a vacant place welcomed me. The remnant of the tree was a mute spectator to the horrifying spectacle of removing a hundred years old history with bulldozer.
I asked the wood cutter “what’s has happened to the tree”.
“We removed it as per the order”
“But why”
“Contractor who bought it on auction, told us to remove it”
“With the tree as road divider it could have been preserved”
“We are paid to cut it so we did, rest you can ask the contractor”
“Any idea, how much he paid for it?”
“No idea”
In the mean while a middle aged gentleman with a huge tummy came to me and asked
“Who are you to ask all these questions?”Interjected  the man.
“But you people should have objected to it, there is a national highway from Bangiriposi to Baripada and this road from Kalabadia to Bangiriposi is not frequently used plus there is no point of widening this road in a place like this. For a few thousand rupees a history is removed, and you are asking me why I am concerned? May I know who you are?”
“I worked as a teacher now a forest officer, the order comes from top and we are just pawn in their hands, tell me, what a forest officer can do in a 50kilometer radius jungle with out a gun?”
“Oh I see, there lays the problem.”
As I left the place with nostalgic memories of a legendary tree, I could see flocks of birds who would have taken their night shelter in that tree were helplessly trying to get a substitute home, will they find it?
